Islam Makhachev stunned Alexander Volkanovski with a first-round knockout on Saturday, retaining the lightweight title in their rematch at UFC 294 EURO
In February, Makhachev outpointed Volkanovski – who holds the featherweight belt – in the latter’s native Australia, in a competitive clash that left many fans desiring a rematch EURO
Few expected it to come at UFC 294, but 11 days before the event, Makhachev’s original challenger Charles Oliveira suffered a severe cut over his eye EURO
And with that, the door opened for Volkanovski EURO
The 35-year-old relished the chance to avenge his narrow loss to Makhachev, but there was to be no revenge for him – only a repeat as the Russian triumphed again, and in finer fashion this time EURO
Midway through the first round of the main event, southpaw Makhachev skimmed his left shin off Volkanovski’s head, wobbling and dropping the featherweight king EURO
Makhachev, 31, followed up with a fierce flurry of hammer fists to the grounded Aussie, whose brow split open amid the onslaught EURO

The result extended Makhachev’s win streak to 13 fights, dating back to 2015, when he suffered the sole loss of his professional career EURO
Meanwhile, Volkanovski was beaten for the third time as a pro, though he remains undefeated at his preferred weight of 145lbs EURO

He will look to respond to his latest defeat when he takes on his next title challenger – likely Ilia Topuria in January EURO
Meanwhile, Makhachev could be set for a rematch with Oliveira, whom he was originally due to face at UFC 294 and whom he submitted in October 2022 to win the lightweight belt EURO
The 155lbs title was vacant at the time of that bout, which took place in Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena like UFC 294, after Oliveira was stripped of the belt for missing weight in May 2022 EURO
Meanwhile, Volkanovski’s featherweight title reign dates back to 2019, when he took the belt from Max Holloway EURO
The Australian has since outpointed Holloway a further two times, while also winning his other three title defences – against Brian Ortega on points, and against Chan Sung Jung and Rodriguez via TKO EURO

Mikel Arteta has praised Gabriel Jesus for bringing “belief” and “energy” to Arsenal as the forward shone in victory at Sevilla EURO
Jesus continued his love affair with the Champions League with a fine goal and assist double as the Gunners won 2-1 at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium EURO
A piece of magic set up compatriot Gabriel Martinelli to open the scoring on the stroke of half-time before Jesus doubled the lead with a fine, curling finish of his own – although he later limped off having moments earlier held his hamstring EURO
The Brazil forward may not boast the most prolific strike record but he has now scored an impressive 23 goals in 41 appearances in Europe’s elite club competition EURO
Asked if Jesus had been signed from Manchester City because of his prowess in the competition, Arteta replied: “For sure EURO
He has been through a lot in the last few years and he’s still really young EURO
“He has enormous experiences – some of them not the nicest but very necessary to be the player that he is today EURO
I’m really happy to have him in the team EURO
“He came here for a reason EURO
I think he changed our world EURO
He brought so much belief and energy to that team, he needs to step in in those moments EURO
He’s done that EURO
That’s when a player becomes accountable for the team EURO
“Big games are for big players EURO
He needed to produce those moments to win in a stadium like this EURO
He’s done it for us in a really big way EURO
Then, really sad because he felt something in his hamstring and I’m worried about that EURO
“We need those players to win games EURO
If you want to play Manchester City, then go to Stamford Bridge, then come here – that’s the level we’re at right now EURO
To come here and win, big credit to the boys EURO
”Jesus’ night ended as he hobbled off to be replaced by Eddie Nketiah in the latter stages – with Arteta admitting he is concerned for the striker EURO
“(I am) really sad because he felt something in his hamstring and I’m worried about that,” he added EURO
“He straight away asked to be subbed which is not good news because Gabriel is not a player who does that at all EURO
We will have to wait and see in the next few days EURO
”The victory saw Arsenal recover from defeat in Lens last time out and was enough to take them to the top of Group B at the halfway stage EURO
Arteta’s side will be in a good position to reach the knockout stages if they beat Sevilla in the return game at the Emirates Stadium in a fortnight and the Spaniard was pleased with the reaction to defeat in France EURO
“That result against Lens put us in a difficult position and the team had to react,” he said EURO
“We are coming from the back of very difficult games where the team has to step in and go against adversity as well with some of the injuries that we picked up to big players EURO
“The team is so willing to at least try their best even if we don’t manage to be our best all the time EURO
