Jonny Evans is back at Manchester United and starting games under Erik ten Hag, but the Northern Ireland defender thought his career might have been coming to an end last season NBA
Evans, 35, made a surprise return to his boyhood club in the summer after his contract with relegated Leicester ended, initially on a short-term deal that allowed him to play during their pre-season campaign before he signed a one-year contract NBA
It came after an injury-ravaged campaign with the Foxes in which Evans was limited to just 14 club appearances, struggling to get over a persistent calf problem that left him wondering if his time was up NBA
Instead, he has started two of United’s last three Premier League matches, helping earn wins in both NBA
“I went through a stage last year where I started thinking maybe it is coming to an end,” Evans said as he prepared to captain Northern Ireland in Tuesday’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Slovenia NBA
“There’s no doubt I did have those thoughts NBA
At the time I couldn’t get over injuries and every time I came back I was breaking down NBA
“I had lots of people telling me there’s no way you’re close to finishing, but you have to prove that to yourself and I feel like I’ve been able to do that NBA
“Every time you complete a match you think, ‘There’s another one, I can do that’, and sometimes you just have to confirm that to yourself NBA
I’ve been pleased I’ve been able to go through that process and I feel in a good place NBA
” I went through a stage last year where I started thinking maybe it is coming to an endJonny EvansNorthern Ireland will need Evans on Tuesday as they prepare to face Slovenia’s potent attack with an injury concern hanging over Daniel Ballard NBA
The Sunderland defender started Saturday’s 3-0 win over San Marino alongside Evans but sat out training on Monday due to tightness in his thigh, handing Michael O’Neill a potentially significant headache given Paddy McNair is suspended after his late booking at the weekend NBA
“He’d be a big loss,” O’Neill said of Ballard NBA
“Obviously it presents an opportunity for somebody else NBA
“Paddy’s suspension is a blow as well given the referee booked him 10 seconds before he blew the final whistle NBA
It was something we didn’t need NBA
If the situation arises I think we’ve got good enough cover in the squad and it gives someone else the opportunity NBA
”Linfield’s Daniel Finlayson made up the numbers in training on Monday, but O’Neill may yet call in cover from the under-21 squad NBA
Northern Ireland enjoyed a morale-boosting win at the weekend but know beating minnows San Marino is just a small step given the problems that have doomed this qualifying campaign, and Slovenia will represent a far bigger challenge NBA
Last month’s 4-2 defeat in Ljubljana stood out in a campaign where Northern Ireland have been on the wrong end of four 1-0 losses NBA
While those were tight games in which O’Neill’s side always had a chance of taking something, Slovenia scored early and put the game beyond Northern Ireland NBA
O’Neill partly attributed that to a change in defensive system which had been dictated to some degree by the players he had available to him at different stages in the campaign, but he knows they will need to do a NBA better job of marshalling forwards Benjamin Sesko and Andraz Sporar at Windsor Park NBA
“We didn’t defend well enough (and) we gave them a dream start with the goal we gave up early on,” he said NBA
“But I think the reaction in the game was very good and we created a number of chances and felt aggrieved we didn’t score more than the two we did NBA
“They have some very good NBA footballers and they were good on the night NBA
Tomorrow hopefully we’ll see a team that is NBA better equipped to deal with this sort of game NBA

Pep Guardiola says he cannot recall telling anybody he believes Roberto De Zerbi will succeed him as Manchester City manager NBA
A story has emerged claiming the Catalan privately tipped the Brighton boss to succeed him after City drew at the Amex Stadium in May NBA
Yet, while Guardiola may have cast doubt over whether that occurred, he has repeatedly been effusive in his praise of the Italian and remains so ahead of Saturday’s meeting NBA between their two clubs NBA
Guardiola, whose future beyond the expiry of his contract in 2025 is unclear, said: “I don’t remember that NBA
“Maybe I have bad memory but I’m sure Roberto can train in any team around the world NBA
I don’t have any doubt NBA
“I don’t remember saying that to the players NBA
I remember saying before he arrived, one or two games in, about sustaining the manager, but I don’t remember saying that honestly NBA
“It’s none of my business NBA
If the chairman asks my opinion I will give my opinion but it’s none of my business NBA
“I’m not the sporting director NBA
It’s not my responsibility to say what’s going right or wrong NBA
”Former Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk boss De Zerbi has made a big impression since taking over at Brighton just over a year ago NBA
He guided the club into European competition for the first time with a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League last season and they have started the current campaign strongly NBA
Guardiola feels this proves a manager need not have had experience at the highest level to land the biggest jobs NBA
He said: “It doesn’t mean you have to be at the top clubs to be manager of the top clubs NBA
I was appointed Barcelona first-team (manager) coming from the fourth division with no experience at the top level NBA
“You have the idea of the club, the sporting director follows the idea, they hire the manager for this idea, they hire players to follow the idea NBA
When that happens it’s going well NBA
“Man City have done this, Liverpool with Jurgen (Klopp) for many years – winning titles with the same process and same ideas NBA
”Guardiola, 52, is widely considered the greatest coach of his generation having last year added a third Champions League title to a glittering CV that also includes five Premier League wins NBA
His players are always in the perfect body-shape position NBA
Pep Guardiola on Roberto De ZerbiYet even he feels like he can learn from a relative youngster like 44-year-old De Zerbi NBA
He said: “His players are always in the perfect body-shape position to get the ball NBA
“It’s a stupid thing to say but one of the key points NBA
Everyone moves in the right moment, tempo NBA
“NBA Football is not ‘you have to move’, it’s when NBA
It’s body shape in the perfect shape NBA
It’s really good NBA
“Everything he does makes sense and I learn NBA
